Leighton Buzzard man found guilty of two fly-tipping offences
Friday, 28 July 2023
A man from Leighton Buzzard has been sentenced to a 12-month community order consisting of 100 hours of unpaid work plus costs after he was found guilty of 2 instances of fly-tipping.
The first offence took place at Gaddesden Turn, Billington on 10 November 2021. We searched the van-sized fly-tip and found evidence of its potential origin, which was then investigated.
On 24 November 2021 we attended the scene of other fly-tips on Stanbridge Road in Leighton Buzzard and, after evidence was found, connected both fly-tips to the same person. A protracted investigation then followed.
On Wednesday 26 July, Denny Joe Bowers appeared at Luton Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to two offences of fly-tipping contrary to Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. He was convicted and sentenced to 12-month community order consisting of 100 hours of unpaid work, costs of £700 were awarded and a victim surcharge of £95.
Councillor Simon Ford, our Executive Member for Highways and Waste, said:
This prosecution is great result for our Neighbourhood Enforcement Team. It sends out a strong message to other would-be fly-tippers that we will pursue you and we will not tolerate this behaviour.
Dumping waste illegally puts local people, wildlife and the environment at risk and costs a great deal to clear up. Failure to properly dispose of any type of waste is simply not acceptable and we will take action against anyone caught - regardless of the type or quantity of discarded waste. There is no excuse for fly-tipping.
If you see someone fly-tipping, or wish to report fly-tipped waste on our land, please call 0300 300 8302 or email customers@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk, giving as much detail as possible. All reports of fly-tipping on private land should be reported to the landowner.
