Children’s Centre offers free half term fun for children
Thursday, 2 March 2023
Leighton Buzzard Children’s Centre, on East Street in Leighton Buzzard, ran a free activity session during half term, which was attended by 18 families with almost 36 children.
The Mighty Explorers session was for children from 4 to 12-years-old, with staff planning activities including slime making, jewellery making, painting, colouring and other crafts. Thanks to the dry weather, the children were able to conduct supervised science experiments outside and do some sports in the centre’s garden.
There was also an opportunity for children to make stress balls from balloons and flour, giving them an opportunity to talk about their feelings.
Leighton Buzzard Children’s Centre already runs a Little Explorers session once a week for pre-school children which is very well attended. The half term session came about after families asked the staff if they were able to run something during the holidays for older siblings.
Families that attended told staff afterwards how much they had enjoyed the session, and how they would like to see it running again during other school holidays. The team hope to hold similar events for older children in future.
Councillor Sue Clark, Executive Member for Families, Education and Children, said:
Our children’s centres are part of our 0-12 Family Service, which means that as well as supporting babies, new parents and pre-school children, they support children up to 12-years-old.
Anyone can attend the centre, with staff running a variety of activities every week including speech and language support, child development and learning sessions and activities for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. It’s great that those who attended the half term sessions enjoyed their time at the centre, and once again demonstrates the importance of children’s centres in our communities.
