Council encourages people to consider benefits of apprenticeships
Tuesday, 8 February 2022
We are supporting this year’s National Apprenticeship Week. This year’s theme is ‘Build the Future".
We are encouraging individuals to think about how apprenticeships can help them develop their skills and knowledge, and encouraging employers to consider how apprentices can help them develop their workforce.
Former apprentice Neve said:
I didn't want to go to University, and with an apprenticeship, I was able to learn and earn at the same time. My apprenticeship experience has been a positive one; it's provided me with the opportunity to attain a qualification but best of all I have made a career!
We run our own apprenticeship scheme, and at any one time can have 130 apprentices – this includes new recruits, existing staff who are upskilling and apprenticeships being carried out at schools.
Councillor Kevin Collins, Executive Member of Planning and Regeneration, said:
We are fully supportive of apprenticeships, and have some fantastic individuals taking part in our own apprenticeship scheme. The scheme allows us to bring new skills and fresh perspectives into our organisation, but also helps us upskill current staff. Apprenticeships can be a fantastic option – apprentices are paid and learn on the job where they will work with colleagues to learn new skills and gain experience. They are also given time to study though; around 20 per cent of the apprentice’s time will be spent studying, so they can work towards gaining a qualification.
