We're asking local people to suggest names for a landmark building in the heart of Houghton Regis.
'Houghton Regis Central' is the working project name for a building which will have a public restaurant, bar and café, shops and health and beauty treatment rooms, alongside 168 independent living apartments for over 55s. Work is set to start on site this month.
Councillor Eugene Ghent, Executive Member for Assets and Housing Delivery, said: "People in Houghton Regis have been instrumental in the concept, design and planning stages, so it makes perfect sense that they'd have great ideas for what to call the building. Your local knowledge and ideas can help us find a name that is both memorable and meaningful."
From now until Tuesday 26 February, you can suggest names for the building. A panel, including members of the community, will then shortlist the suggestions and you’ll be able to vote on the finalists from Wednesday 6 March to Tuesday 19 March. The final name will be revealed in March.
The modern independent living development for the over 55s is the third of its kind in Central Bedfordshire, following on from the successful Priory View in Dunstable and Greenfields (Aldwyck) in Leighton Buzzard. We'll manage Houghton Regis Central and it reflects a key priority to invest in care and accommodation to meet the needs of our older residents.
Councillor Carole Hegley, Executive Member for Adults, Social Care and Housing Operations, added: "We are committed to using opportunities to reinvest in Houghton Regis as well as improving the range and quality of accommodation for our older residents. That's what independent living schemes are all about - providing that quality accommodation in a supportive environment, coupled with the access to round-the-clock care if it's needed. The community facilities are open to everyone and our aim has always been that this scheme will become a living, breathing part of the local community."
