Biggleswade transport interchange gets the green light
Monday, 5 July 2021
Plans to create a new transport interchange for Biggleswade at the railway station have been approved by our Development Management Committee.
The plans put forward include the creation of a transport interchange, with bus stops, improved pedestrian access and a bus turning circle, located on unused land owned by Network Rail.
Councillor Kevin Collins, our Executive Member for Planning and Regeneration, said:
This is great news for the people of Biggleswade and surrounding areas. The interchange will help us to make the most of Biggleswade’s prime location and accessibility, less than an hour’s commute from London, and only 30 minutes from Cambridge, Luton and Bedford.’
The changes that are being planned include:
- a bus/rail interchange providing improved bus links to and from rail services
- improved pedestrian access to the station and the interchange
- enhanced public space using high quality materials
- ‘real-time’ bus and rail arrival/departure information
- improved secure cycle parking
- re-configured road layout including an extension to the 20mph speed limit
- a new zebra crossing
Councillor Collins added:
The changes will make it easier for people to switch between different modes of transport and encourage people to use sustainable services rather than their own vehicles.
The plans are the result of our collaboration with Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), and are funded jointly by us and Homes England’s Housing Infrastructure Fund. The interchange will be complemented by step free access, improved cycle storage and toilet facilities, funded by the Department of Transport’s ‘Access for All’ Programme, which provides accessible routes to and between platforms.
