£1000 fine for illegal fly-tip in Houghton Regis
Friday, 2 February 2024
A former Central Bedfordshire resident has been issued a £1000 Fixed Penalty Notice following a complaint of fly-tipping in a garage block in Houghton Regis.
The incident took place in Cemetery Road in August 2023, and was reported to the Council by concerned residents. Our investigation, which included an examination of the dumped waste, led to a former resident at her new address in Derby.
The former resident attended an interview in December 2023, where she admitted to depositing waste in the garage block while clearing out her belongings before returning her rented property to the landlord. She claimed to have revisited the site the following day to retrieve it, but officers found waste at the location during a subsequent inspection.
As a result of her admission and the evidence gathered during the investigation, the former resident was issued a £1000 Fixed Penalty Notice in January 2024 for the offence of illegal fly-tipping. In a positive resolution, she cooperated with the enforcement process and paid a discounted penalty of £750 for prompt payment.
Councillor Rebecca Hares, Executive Member responsible for Health and Community Liaison, said:
We're committed to keeping our communities safe and clean for people in Central Bedfordshire. This successful enforcement sends a clear message to anyone who might be thinking of fly-tipping - you'll be held responsible for your actions, regardless of the type of waste.
We are urging communities to work together and share information to help catch fly-tippers. Anyone who witnesses fly-tipping or wants to report a fly-tip can visit www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/reportit, call 0300 300 8302, or email customers@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.
