Regeneration of Houghton Regis
Taking an area-wide approach to regeneration in Houghton Regis, we are also exploring options to improve the town centre and existing communities such as Parkside and Tithe Farm.
Kingsland is a 22-hectare site in the town, which includes various education establishments and Houghton Regis Leisure Centre. The site is approximately 50% unused green open space, already identified within the Houghton Regis North 1 (HRN1) development, which includes £21 million for redevelopment.
The Kingsland campus has been identified as an important location for community assets. A feasibility study to look at options for the site has been completed.
The study looked at how the site could accommodate a secondary school, primary school and leisure centre on the part of the site not currently built on.
Kingsland also remains the preferred location for an integrated health and care hub.
The need for a new secondary school became a priority to locate on the site. Draft designs were consulted on and a planning application has now been granted (subject to submission of further details).
Our Leisure Strategy identified Kingsland as a location for a new replacement leisure centre. We have been successful in a bid for £20 million Levelling Up Funding for a new community and leisure centre with connecting cycle paths.
