Won’t building more homes increase the risk of flooding?

The Local Plan is designed to work with nature to manage the risk from flooding, increase resilience and maintain a sustainable environment. The Local Plan will make sure development is directed to areas with the lowest risk of flooding. Strict policies have been put in place at a national level and in the current Local Plan to ensure new developments do not cause flooding problems and, in some cases, seeks to lower the risk. Natural solutions such as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) will be used to manage and capture rainwater and provide benefits for wildlife.

We will expect new buildings to be designed to adapt to future weather extremes which may result from climate change. This could include the use of green roofs or water recycling to capture rainwater, for example.
