What does sustainable development mean in the context of the Local Plan?

Sustainable development is an approach to new homes, jobs and everything that goes with them that aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development needs to meet three core elements: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection.

Government guidance makes clear that it is the purpose of planning to help achieve sustainable development, rather than development at any cost. Whilst there is an expectation that the Local Plan will deliver the new homes and jobs that we need, it also needs to contain strong safeguards to conserve and enhance our valuable natural and historic environment.
