Sandy Leisure Centre redevelopment

Up until mid 2024, Sandy Secondary School was host to a range of sport and leisure facilities available to the community, as well as its own students. Our plans for the major refurbishment and new facilities at Sandy Secondary School meant that the health and fitness suite, and the two rooms previously used for community exercise classes, would be taken back by the school as part of its expansion plan. This positive and vital investment in the school was set to leave Sandy without any sport and leisure facilities for the wider community.

What did we do to resolve this?

We consulted with residents in 2021 to see what sports and leisure facilities they wanted, having identified Jenkins Pavilion as a possible development opportunity for community facilities. 92% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the proposals to provide two full-size purpose-built exercise studios, and a flexible studio space for spin bikes and other activities. 89% agreed or strongly agreed with the proposal to provide a larger gym, and 83% agreed or strongly agreed with the proposal to provide cubicle changing facilities. We used all of this information in submitting a planning application for the expansion of Jenkins Pavilion.

In May 2023, our work to expand the Jenkins Pavilion started to take shape and Everyone Active was awarded the contract to run the centre.

The result and impact of our investment?

In September 2024, we opened two brilliant new facilities: a well-equipped, modern school building in the heart of Sandy striving for good outcomes for the next generation; and a brand new £5m two-storey sports and leisure centre, hosting fantastic top-spec equipment and lots of exciting exercise classes to book onto.
