The changing school landscape

Why do schools need to explore change?

Central Bedfordshire Council is committed to improving educational achievement, and moving to a two-tier education system is part of this.

Also, there are up to 39,350 new homes expected to be built in Central Bedfordshire by 2035, so more school places are needed to meet this demand.

Nationwide, the number of middle schools has declined significantly, from a peak of around 1,400 in 1983 to just around 100 now.

Teacher training is now geared towards primary and secondary education, so by moving to this two-tier model and aligning with the rest of the country, schools in Central Bedfordshire will be better placed to attract and retain the best teachers.

While, not every school will change, making the right changes at the right time and in a co-ordinated way will ensure the future viability of the schools and will see some school facilities increased, so they are fit for purpose, to deliver the curriculum into the future.
