What is the role of the High Sheriff?
The High Sheriff:
- acts as the Returning Officer for parliamentary elections
- maintains the loyalty of subjects to the Crown
- is responsible for the proclamation of the accession of a new Sovereign
- attendance at Royal visits
- undertakes duties to support and encourage voluntary and statutory organisations engaged in all aspects of law and order
- provides hospitality and look after the well-being of High Court Judges when they are visiting the county on circuit
- works with organisations involved with young people, in particular through the Association's two Charities, National Crimebeat (link opens in new window) (and other similar initiatives) and DebtCred
- makes awards to those who in the opinion of the Judges at a criminal trial have been active in the apprehension of certain offenders - in accordance with the Criminal Law Act 1826
