Businesses: How to pay for an apprenticeship
When recruiting an apprentice, you need to consider the costs involved; the training cost, and the salary cost.
As the employer, you are responsible for paying the apprentice’s salary, which must be at least the National Apprentice Minimum Wage. The apprentice’s salary cannot be paid using funds in your Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) account or government-contributed funds. Funds within your DAS account can only be used towards the apprenticeship training cost.
If you pay the apprenticeship levy, you’ll need to use funds within your organisation's DAS account to pay for the apprenticeship training. We’ll help you to link your DAS account to ours, so that payments can be taken automatically.
If you don’t pay the apprenticeship levy, the government will pay between 95% and 100% of the apprenticeship training cost. If the apprentice you recruit is aged 16 to 21, the government will pay 100% of the apprenticeship training costs, otherwise, you’ll just pay 5%.
You’ll need to create a DAS account if you haven’t already to reserve the government-contributed funds for the apprenticeship training.
