COVID-19 testing

The latest COVID-19 guidance can be found on the GOV UK website. Anyone who has any symptoms of coronavirus can now ask for a test through the NHS website.

People working within care settings are classed as essential workers and can apply for priority testing by making an appointment on the online booking system. You can select to attend a drive-through appointment at a regional test site or request a home test kit.

The testing process

The test involves taking a swab of the nose and the back of the throat. The swab tests are analysed at a lab and test results aim to be returned within 48 hours of the swab being taken, or within 72 hours for a home test.

Testing in care homes and supported living

The Department of Health and Social Care has launched an online portal to make it easier for care homes that support adults to request testing kits for residents and staff.

The test results of residents will be communicated to the care home manager only so please ensure contact with the manager can be made to avoid delays in receiving the test results. Care home managers should notify Public Health England of the first confirmed COVID-19 positive resident when the results are available so they can provide guidance on infection control.

Workers with symptoms

Care home workers with symptoms should be self-isolating and can access testing through the self-referral or employer referral portals.
