What your landlord must do, if you live in a house in multiple occupation (HMO)
If you're living in a house in multiple occupation (HMO) your landlord must comply with certain standards to make sure:
- there are an adequate number of amenities, such as toilets, bathrooms and cooking facilities; view or download our guide (PDF) to find out what the minimum requirements are
- there are adequate fire precautions, such as fire doors, smoke detectors and alarms (find out more from Bedfordshire Fire Service)
- the property is a suitable size and layout for the number of people living there; view the amenity standards and management regulations to find out the minimum requirements
All HMOs (where 5 or more people form 2 households or more) require a licence from us, to be displayed in the property.
If you live in a property which you believe may be an unlicensed HMO, or you can't find the licence in our public register (PDF), please tell us.
To complain about an HMO, email psh@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.
