What's an educational psychologist (EP)?

An educational psychologist is someone who uses their knowledge of how children play, learn, think, feel, behave and interact with others to make things better for the child or young person at school and at home. Educational psychologists work across the age range from 0 to 25-year-olds. All educational psychologists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

How do educational psychologists work?

Educational psychologists work with schools in a variety of ways, including:

  • individual pupil consultation and assessment which may include consultation/assessment/observation/professionals meetings (EHC, Core and Commissioned work)
  • multi-agency working
  • helping schools deliver targeted group work
  • supporting pupil and staff well-being
  • consultation about particular areas of SEND practice and provision
  • developing evidence-based practice
  • delivering training
  • supporting with whole school SEND development projects
  • supporting with research
  • supporting with planning for provision and interventions
