Elective home education

Home schooling (elective home education)

Children of compulsory school age must receive an education that is efficient, full-time and suitable to the child’s age, ability and aptitude, and to any special educational needs which he / she may have.

Most parents choose to send their children to school, but you can teach your child at home. This is called home schooling or elective home education.

If you decide to home educate, you take on all the financial responsibility, including the costs of any exams you enter your child for.

If you decide to take your child out of school, write to the head teacher and notify them of this.

If your child has special educational needs

If a special school is named on your child's education, health and care plan (EHCP), you must get our agreement before your child’s name is removed from the school roll.
