New School Places Programme
The school organisation and capital planning team is responsible for making sure that there are sufficient school places for every child in Central Bedfordshire, fulfilling the council's statutory duty and implementing the identified need set out within the published School Organisation Plan (PDF 1.7MB) which is refreshed on an annual basis.
We secure and deliver the capital investment required to ensure choice and diversity in providing sufficient high-quality school places. Funding is provided from a range of sources, including the Department for Education and from developer contributions negotiated by the council for new school places where required as a result of new housing.
The original New School Places Programme for 2012 / 13 to 2016 / 17 was approved by our executive on 27 March 2012. This represented a £100 million, five year investment programme, subject to annual refresh, of 6500 new school places.
