National Offer Day delight as most children granted first-preference school
16 April 2018
Children across Central Bedfordshire are today (Monday, 16 April) discovering where they will be starting school or transferring to middle school in September.
And it’s great news for almost everyone with 96% of the 3,370 pupils who applied for a place at a lower or primary school in Central Bedfordshire for the 2017/18 academic year granted their first preference.
That continues the good news here with 95.6% getting their first preference school last year and 94% in 2016.
Of those on-time applicants that didn’t, 2.6% got their second preference, 0.4% achieved their third preference and the remaining 1% will be allocated an alternative school which has places available.
Meanwhile, 95.7% of the 2,317 Central Bedfordshire pupils transferring to middle school were offered their first preference.
Again, that’s up on last year’s figure of 94.4%.
A further 3.6% have received their second preference and 0.7% will be allocated an alternative school which has places available.
Councillor Steven Dixon, Executive Member for Families, Education and Children, said: "I know that this is always a nervous time of year for many families so I am delighted that so many of them have received their first-preference school.
"This is down to a lot of hard work by many different teams at the council – from our admissions team processing thousands of applications each year, to those teams responsible for ensuring that we continue to create additional school places in areas of need.
"That is reflected in the fact that the number of children achieving their first-preference school continues to rise year on year."
More than 90% of applications were made online and these have received an email with their offer this morning, with offer letters being sent out by second-class post today.
Anyone who wishes to change the place their child has been offered needs to submit a change of preference form by Monday, 30 April. These will then be considered – along with any late applications – on Monday, 4 June.
