Flitwick Leisure Centre

Why we redeveloped Flitwick Leisure Centre

Our leisure strategy identified the need for larger facilities in Flitwick.

The strategy was adopted by the council in January 2013, and identifies the priorities for leisure facilities across the area.

A new leisure centre in Flitwick was opened in May 2016, at a cost of £14.7m.

In its first year, the facility welcomed over 500,000 people to the centre. This was a 96% increase compared to the final 12 months of the old centre, which was adjacent.

Facilities include:

  • an eight lane 25m swimming pool
  • a 120-station health and fitness gym
  • a court sports hall with four courts for activities such as badminton, martial arts, trampolining, table tennis, and gymnastics
  • two squash courts
  • a climbing wall
  • three studios offering a range of classes
There is also on on-site health referral room for confidential health and wellbeing advice.

The centre is great for families, and features a toddler splash pool, a separate learner pool with a variable height floor suitable for both adults and children to use; swimming lessons, a crèche; and a cafe for light refreshments.

Flitwick Leisure Centre is part of a wider £40m council investment to support active lifestyles and help improve public health.

The previous building had undergone a number of extensions over the past 30 years. It was difficult to extend any further, and was becoming inefficient for us to run. Its facilities were not big enough for the local community and would not cope with the demand we expect from our growing population. Population growth in the area is expected to increase by 13% from 2011 to 2031, with 3100 new homes expected.
