Re-provision of council-owned care homes for older people

Rising expectations

We want the best quality of life for our residents and older people have expectations about maintaining the living standards they are used to. We want today’s older residents and future generations to have access to a modern living environment as well as good quality care.

In light of rising customer expectations and new specialist accommodation for older people being built, we have reviewed our own accommodation.

As replacement care home capacity becomes available, we aim to decommission the remaining 3 council-owned care homes, as the buildings are approaching the end of their economic life and do not meet customer expectations or modern standards.

Moving home at any time of life is often stressful, so the process for residents, relatives and staff involved in our care homes rightly demands a high-quality service to provide the best possible outcomes for all involved. Colleagues in our Meeting the Accommodation Needs of Older People (MANOP) team have made this short video to help reassure people involved in the process of moving from a council-owned care home to a new care home.

Good practice

The MANOP Team has successfully re-provided three council owned homes in recent years, establishing local good practice in supporting residents to move and settle well into their new home.

The learning from each re-provision is reflected in the documents below that relate to good practice in closing, re-providing and choosing a new home in Central Bedfordshire.
