Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)

The Local Government Pension Scheme covers council employees. The LGPS is a contributory scheme and the amount an employee contributes to the scheme depends on how much they are paid. The contribution rate is between 5.5% and 12.5% of an employee's salary.

Employers' contributions to the LGPS vary depending upon how much is needed to ensure benefits under the Scheme are properly funded, and are set independently.

The rules governing the pension scheme are contained in regulations made by Parliament.
