Flitwick masterplan

Serving a growing community

Flitwick is a small town of 12,700 people, around 5 mi (8.0 km) from junction 12 of the M1 motorway.

Flitwick has a station on the Thameslink line with trains going north to Bedford and south to London, Gatwick Airport and Brighton.

The combination of a small town community and good rail links has made Flitwick a popular place to live for commuters, and the town has seen a steady growth in population in recent years. However, the town centre and its retail facilities have not kept pace with this growth.

The current town centre lacks a focal point for the community, shoppers and businesses and is in need of redevelopment and substantial investment.

Putting the heart back into Flitwick

Following public consultation on proposals in November / December 2007 (the results are set out in the Public Consultation Report (PDF 766.2KB) ), further studies have been commissioned to respond to some of the issues and concerns raised by local residents.

The proposals include building on the town centre’s strengths by creating a comprehensive mixed-use development. There is a unique opportunity for Flitwick to expand existing and create new town centre activities, making the town a great place to live, work and shop. This development has the potential to bring back shoppers who currently feel that the range of retail choice is insufficient and prefer to shop elsewhere.
